Assessment of the safety culture at a mining port in Africa

Client name : Confidential
Name of the project : Safety Culture Maturity Assessment
Date : May 2022 – June 2023

A subsidiary of an international group operating in the mining and logistics sector, located near the capital of an African country, asked AEGIDE INTERNATIONAL to assess the safety culture at its site and identify areas for improvement.

The main objective of this mission was to diagnose safety practices and make targeted recommendations to strengthen the site’s safety performance.

The AEGIDE INTERNATIONAL team faced several challenges:

  • the co-activity of subcontractors from different cultures,
  • third-party employees unfamiliar with safety investigations,
  • and sometimes inconsistent procedures or methods.

This assessment identified priority areas for improvement and proposed support for a more robust and structured safety culture, tailored to the specific challenges of the site.

The AEGIDE INTERNATIONAL team conducted the assessment using a structured, iterative process, ensuring a comprehensive analysis and operational recommendations:

  1. Observer assessment: Analysis of practices in the field and identification of deviations from safety standards.
  2. Self-assessment: Collection of teams’ views on their practices and perceptions of risks.
  3. Findings and recommendations: Summary of observations and formulation of concrete recommendations to improve the safety culture.
  4. Action plan: Development of an operational plan to implement the recommendations in a structured manner.
  5. Monthly monitoring of actions: Support in the deployment and monitoring of corrective measures to ensure their long-term effectiveness.
